“I can’t draw.” We hear it all the time. But that’s nonsense. With this warm-up, you’ll unleash the doodler inside everyone.

So, when do you bring out the Aquarium method?
Anyone can jot words on sticky notes. But some sessions are begging for doodlers. Quick sketches and storyboards can make a world of difference. Sadly, many people hold back, simply because they believe they can’t draw.
This easy warm-up proves that yes, they can draw — or that there’s always at least one hidden sketching talent in every team.
How do you use The Aquarium?
To run The Aquarium, grab some sticky notes and (if you like) the Aquarium canvas. Or simply sketch your own aquarium.
- Hand out eight sticky notes to everyone and challenge them to sketch eight different fish in just a minute or two. Eight goldfish won’t cut it, they’ve got to be unique. Whales, pike-perch, squids, hammerheads, anchovies, lionfish… you name it, you draw it!
- Once time’s up, have everyone share their fish and pick eight to go into the aquarium. That’s when participants realize not just that everyone can draw, but also who’s got some serious sketching skills.
- Hand out the A3 aquariums and let the group gather the funniest, most creative, and coolest fish to stick on the A3 Aquarium canvas. By choosing which fish make it, they’re getting a sneak peek at decision-making in action.
